MARINE SURVEY
- The following statement
concerning the procedures in the inspection of the subject vessel is for your
information and benefit. Survey results will be transmitted only to
the person or persons authorizing this survey. Please fill out the Marine
Survey Work Order, sign and return prior to survey date.
- Surveys are commonly
performed on most used boats 20 feet or larger and are usually required to
obtain insurance and financing, especially on boats older than 10 years. A
survey can save a prospective buyer thousands of dollars by advising him of
possible defects and by determining the fair market value of the vessel. The
seller of a boat may also request a survey to determine the fair market value
before placing the boat on the market. If a vessel is damaged, the owner’s
insurance company will require a survey be performed to determine the cost of
repairs.
- The survey will include
inspection of all accessible parts of the vessel, including the
condition and safety of all accessible parts and the fair market and
replacement value of the vessel. Recommendations will include what must be
done to insure safety and whether the boat is sound for its intended use.
- Bartlett Marine Services
urges that all gasoline and diesel engines be surveyed by a qualified Engine
Surveyor to determine the condition of the engines, gears and pumps, heat
exchangers, coolers, etc. Further recommends a sea trial be performed and
evaluated and that the vessel be hauled out for dry dock inspection of the
wetted surface area of the hull and underwater machinery.
- Time and additional expenses
can be saved by preparing the vessel for inspection by clearing miscellaneous
equipment from lockers and cabin areas, to make the vessel more accessible.
It may be necessary to require minor dismantling of interior ceilings,
headliners, or flooring in order to gain access to suspected areas. Fasteners
on wood boats may need to be inspected for corrosion. Removal and
re-installation of these parts are the responsibility of the owner of the
vessel and should be done by qualified persons.
- The report will be prepared
after a thorough visual examination of the hull, machinery, rigging, hardware
and equipment. No joiner work or fasteners will be removed nor will any
destructive testing be performed without written consent by the owner.
The report will be submitted in good faith, without prejudice and constitutes
a description of the condition of the vessel at the time of the survey. The
survey report represents the condition of the vessel at the time of
inspection, and is the unbiased opinion of the surveyor, but is is not
to be considered an inventory or a warranty either specified or implied.
Additionally, the survey will not address the vessel's stability
characteristics, inherent defects or the internal condition of machinery.
- Should the Client, for any
reason, seek to bring legal action against the Surveyor or his/her company,
the total of any damages that may be awarded will be limited to the charge for
the survey as listed on the Survey Work Order.
